1 out of 3 Filipinos is Poor: Poverty Worsened Under Arroyo's Watch

Manila, Philippines- Government's own statistics have caught up with them said local anti-poverty coalition, Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP)-Philippines, after the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) reported yesterday that poverty has worsened between 2003 and 2006.

According to NSCB, poverty incidence increased to 26.9% for families in 2006 compared to 24.4% in 2003.  These figures showed that 33 out of 100 Filipinos (1 out of 3) were poor in 2006, compared to 30 in 2003.

"The billions of pesos worth of Hunger and Poverty Mitigation Programs launched by the government, from school feeding programs to the most recent cash-incentive programs, are last ditch efforts to save  face  in an increasingly embarrassing situation of worsening poverty and inequality despite its boast of record economic growth. What's worse is that these resources are used more for political propaganda, and could even be partially lost to corruption that has reached meteoric heights under the Arroyo administration," said Ana Maria R. Nemenzo, GCAP-Philippines anti-poverty advocate. "To eradicate poverty, a strong leadership committed to people's welfare is necessary to ensure increased investment in social services, agriculture, and asset reforms, amongst others."
